FILM SUMMARY

Indie auteur Todd Solondz (Welcome to the Dollhouse, Storytelling) is known for directing films that draw strong reactions, and "Palindromes" is certainly no exception. In his latest provocation, Solondz tackles the touchy subject of abortion, positioned through the eyes of Aviva, a 13-year-old girl who wishes to have a baby. From this setup, what follows is a daring and bold storytelling method that uses eight different performers to play Aviva throughout the film, including - among others - an androgynous boy, a large African-American female, and actress Jennifer Jason Leigh. The technique complements the story, as issues concerning identity, family, pedophilia, and even Christian pop music factor into a dizzying, ambiguous coming-of-age film that only Solondz could pull off. "No comic filmmaker in America today works so hard to stay on the knife's edge between humor and pathos or is so eager to challenge his viewers emotionally," says J.R. Jones of the Chicago Reader.
