Departmental Office: The Department of Anthropology is located in Macbride Hall (MH) in room 114. The Department phone number is 335-0522. The mailboxes for Prof. Ciochon and for the teaching assistants are located in the Departmental Office. Aim of Course: This course examines the fossil evidence for the origin and diversification of the Primate Order from its beginnings in the late Paleocene to the evolution of modern species. We investigate the fossil record, morphology, systematics and biomolecular studies of the primates focusing particular attention on the anthropoids - the New World and Old World Monkeys and Apes.

Required Textbooks:

Fleagle, J.G. Primate Adaptation and Evolution, Academic Press, 1999, 2nd edition

Ciochon, R.L. & Fleagle, J.G. Primate Evolution and Human Origins, Aldine de Gruyter, 1987

Additional Reading:

The majority of the additional reading will be posted to my website as PDF files. There will also be a few articles handed out in class. My website is located at http://www.uiowa.edu/~bioanth/

Research Paper: A final examination research paper of at least 15 pages in length (double-spaced with one-inch margins in 12pt Times New Roman font) is required. This paper is expected to be a detailed review of one particular aspect of primate evolution or primate morphology. The topic for the paper is to be chosen by the student in consultation with the professor. During the final meetings of the class the student is expected to give an oral presentation of the topic of her research paper. The final exam paper is due on Dec. 20 at 12:00pm in 114 MH.

Grading:

Midterm Exam #1 100 points 30%

Midterm Exam #2 100 points 30%

Oral Presentation: 30 points 10%

Final Exam Paper: 100 points 35%

Makeup Examination Policy: My general policy is not to allow makeup exams except in extraordinary cases where a student can document that she or he has been hospitalized, imprisoned, or otherwise prevented from taking the exam. To allow any other policy is simply not fair to the great majority of students who do take the exam at the scheduled time.
