UI Research VP Announces New Nanotechnology Institute, Director
Meredith Hay, University of Iowa vice president for research, today announced the formation of a new UI enterprise, the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Institute at the University of Iowa (NNI@UI). The institute, to be directed by Professor Vicki Grassian, will include more than 30 core researchers from six UI colleges already engaged in more than $6 million of nanotechnology-related research. more

UI Hybridoma Bank Establishes $250,000-Plus Graduate Student Endowment
The University of Iowa Developmental Studies Hybridoma Bank (DSHB), under the direction of Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver/Emil Witschi Professor David Soll, has announced that it will provide a gift toward the Graduate Student Endowment in the Department of Biological Sciences of a minimum of $250,000 over the next five years. Depending upon DSHB sales and expenses over the next five years the gift could reach $1 million. more

UI College Of Pharmacy Faculty, Preceptors Honored
Aliasger Salem, Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmaceutics, was named Teacher of the Year by first-year pharmacy students. Michael Ernst, Pharm.D., clinical associate professor in clinical and administrative pharmacy, was named Teacher of the Year by second-year pharmacy students; and Karen Farris, Ph.D., associate professor of clinical and administrative pharmacy, was honored as Teacher of the Year by the college's third-year students. Jeffrey Reist, clinical instructor, was named Collegiate Teacher of the Year. more

Ramaswamy Named Carver College Of Medicine Assistant Dean For Scientific Affairs
S. Ramaswamy, Ph.D., associate professor of biochemistry in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, has been named the college's assistant dean for scientific affairs. more

Soll Elected Fellow Of American Academy Of Microbiology
University of Iowa biological sciences researcher David Soll has been elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM). more

UI Professors will Receive Collegiate Teaching Awards
Nine University of Iowa colleges have announced the winners of the 2005-06 Collegiate Teaching Awards. These faculty members are recognized for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching in their respective colleges: Lon Moeller, Henry B. Tippie College of Business; Sherry Kay Watt, College of Education; Er-Wei Bai and John M. Wiencek, College of Engineering; Janet Guthmiller, College of Dentistry; Patrick Bauer, College of Law; Craig Gibson, Craig Kletzing, Judith Liskin-Gasparro, Michael Lovaglia, Daniel M. Quinn and Bryon Winn, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; David Bedell, Jo Benda and Rebecca Hegeman, UI Roy J. and Lucile A. Carver College of Medicine; Nicollet Markovetz and Janet Specht, College of Nursing; and Joseph Cavanaugh, College of Public Health.

Valentine Receives $200,000 Grant To Study Drinking Water Contaminants Richard Valentine, professor of civil and environmental engineering in the University of Iowa College of Engineering, has received a two-year, $200,000 grant from the American Water Works Association Research Foundation (AWWARF) to study environmental contaminants in drinking water systems, effective Jan. 1. more
