African American History and Culture from the Smithsonian Institution.

African American Mosaic from the Library of Congress. Photos, essays, documents, and much more. An excellent and entertaining site.

Poole's Plus includes Poole's index to Periodical Literature 1802-1906, Stead's Index to Periodicals 1890-1906, Jones & Chipman's Index to Legal Perioidcal Literature 1786-1922, Richardson's Index to Periodical Articles in Religion 1890-1899, and Cumulative Index to a Selected List of Periodicals 1896-1899.

Periodicals Contents Index Electronic index to thousands of periodicals in the humanities and social sciences, covering each periodical from its first issue (as early as 1790) to 1990/91. Every article is indexed. The scope is international, including journals in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and other languages.

American Poetry Full-text database The American Poetry Full-Text Database features the works of more than 200 American poets, along with six landmark anthologies of American poetry. The database gathers the works of the most influential American poets, from the Colonial period to the early twentieth century.

Dictionary of Literary Biography (A collection of biographical, bibliographic and critical essays on authors. The scope includes North American, British, Commonwealth, modern European, Latin American, African and Caribbean literature. Authors include novelists, dramatists, poets, essayists, critics, historians, journalists and biographers.) AND Contemporary Authors (A bio-bibliographical guide to current writers in fiction, general nonfiction, poetry, journalism, drama, motion pictures, television and other fields.) Note: be sure to click on "search all literature databases."

Literature Online including The Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL) and brief biographical information. You may search for words within the full texts of literary works, including poems.

Modern Language Association Bibliography The basic index for literature, 1963-present. Indexes material on literature, languages, linguistics and folklore.

Cambridge History of English and American Literature (Bartleby.com) Contents range from poetry, fiction, drama and essays to history, theology and political writing. 18 volumes, originally published 1907-1921. Online combination of two sets. Good articles - easily searched.

Database of African-American Poetry (NOTE: search under "Individual Literature Collections)
This database covers the works of 54 African-American poets writing in the 18thand 19th centuries. The bibliographic source for the database is Afro-American poetry and drama 1760-1975. Software features include keyword, title, first line, poet, period and gender searches, and custom viewing and printing options.

English Poetry Full-text Database English Poetry, Second Edition contains more than 183,000 poems, comprising essentially the complete canon of poetry in English from the 8th century to the early 20th. Drawn from nearly 4,900 printed sources, the collection represents the work of more than 2,700 poets. Details of the works included in English Poetry, Second Edition are given in the bibliography.
