1. FINAL GRADES
Your final grade will be based on your total score from exams, quizzes, and labs. Grades are assigned using a standard curve that reflects the accomplishment of the class as a whole. The mean of the curve represents a 'C.' Plus-minus grades will not be applied.
Exam 1 100
Exam II 100
Quizzes 100 (three given lowest dropped)
Lab 100*
Final Exam 100
Total 500
*Students enrolled in 12:002 (Lectures in Age of Dinosaurs) will not be attending lab, and so the grade will be based on 400 points.
If you wish to appeal a grade received on an exam, quiz, or lab, your appeal must be made within 7 days from the time it is handed back.
2. EXAMS
There are two midterm exams, on Oct. 3 and Nov. 5. The final exam is on December 21. Makeup exams will only be given in extreme circumstances, with documentation. Both exams will cover material from lectures and reading assignments. Exams will be returned in lab.
Exams will focus on specific information provided since the preceding exam, but will require application of broad concepts learned throughout the semester.
You are responsible for expressing yourself in proper English. We can only grade what you said, not what you meant.
3. QUIZZES
Three quizzes will be given in lecture one before the first midterm, one between the midterms, and one between the second midterm and final. Quizzes will last no more than ten minutes, will be on recent course material, and will be given without warning. Your lowest quiz score will be dropped. As with exams, makeups will only be given in emergencies.
4. LABS
Labs are held in 35 TH. You are required to attend the lab for which you are registered. If you miss lab, you should contact your T.A. as soon as possible. The labs provide an opportunity to examine specimens, obtain essential background information used in lecture, and discuss issues raised in the course. Each lab session will include a short assignment due the following week.
6. STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
I am happy to make appropriate accomodations for students with disabilities. Speak to me after class or see me in office hours.
7. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
Academic dishonesty is not tolerated, whether in lecture or lab. It cheapens the value of your education and insults your fellow students. Anything you turn in, including labs, must represent your own work. The universitys policy on academic integrity can be found in your Student Academic Handbook (ch. 7). You do not want to be caught cheating in my class. Have a nice day.
