- How does Hippolytus 'mirror' Artemis?
Does Phaedra 'mirror'Aphrodite? If so, how?
- W.S. Barrett, the most distinguished scholar to have commented
on this play, sees the epiphany of Artemis at the play's end
as a way of opposing the two goddesses there as they had been
at the beginning. Nothing has been resolved, nor can it be, in
their essential conflict. Would you agree with this asessment?
Why or why not?
- In the two sanctuaries of Hippolytus, at Athens and Troezen,
Asclepius, the god of healing, came by the fourth century also
to have a place of honor. Why do you think this particular god
would have been worshipped in such a context?
