Lecture Terms and Questions

November 7, 2000

  1. How does Hippolytus 'mirror' Artemis? Does Phaedra 'mirror'Aphrodite? If so, how?
  2. W.S. Barrett, the most distinguished scholar to have commented on this play, sees the epiphany of Artemis at the play's end as a way of opposing the two goddesses there as they had been at the beginning. Nothing has been resolved, nor can it be, in their essential conflict. Would you agree with this asessment? Why or why not?
  3. In the two sanctuaries of Hippolytus, at Athens and Troezen, Asclepius, the god of healing, came by the fourth century also to have a place of honor. Why do you think this particular god would have been worshipped in such a context?
