  1. How is the event described In Iliad 11.603 the "beginning of Patroklos' evil?" When Patroklos determines to go into battle, what does Achilles tell him to do, and not to do? Does he obey Achilles? Trace how the identification between Achilles and Patroklos--and their differentiation (cf., e.g. lines 707-9)--develops over the course of book 16, and discuss
    the role that these scenes play in the theme(s) of the Iliad.
  2. Why does Achilles need a new suit of armor in book 18? Describe his new armor and its making, paying special attention to his shield. How does the scene onthe shield resemble, in content and perhaps function in the poem, some of the similes Homer uses in the Iliad?
