Spring Semester, 2005
Mid-Term Examination
March 23, 2005
DO BOTH SECTIONS
Section I
Answer one of the following questions (40 minutes):
1. Some historians claim that utilitarianism and evangelicalism did more to shape British history than political or economic developments. Describe briefly the major ideas of utilitarianism and evangelicalism, and discuss some ways that they influenced British social, religious, and political institutions.
2. From the time of John Wilkes to the passage of the Great Reform bill, Britain's political, religious, and legal institutions were subjected to a barrage of criticism (for instance, by radicals such as Paine and Shelley). How did Britain survive this period without a political revolution?
Tips:
Questions will be taken from topics discussed in the lectures.
Answer the question directly, with a thesis and supporting arguments, illustrated with information from the lectures and text. The answer will be judged on the quality of the argument.
Do not include information merely because you have learned it.
2.
Section II
Briefly identify and explain the significance of five of the following (10 minutes only):
These will be taken from the terms in bold, or linked, on the lecture outlines.
Do not take too much time on the identifications.
Use one sentence to identify the term, and a second sentence to explain why it is important.
The more precise, the better.
As a courtesy to others, please leave the room quietly, and shut the door gently.
