Finding rare books, manuscripts and archives
There are many printed volumes in the Main Library that
guide researchers to archives and manuscript repositories.
At the moment, the on-line indexes given here only cover
American collections.
John Martin Rare Book Room, Hardin Library for the Health
Sciences
Dr. John Martin gave his library of rare and
important medical books to the University of Iowa. This
is a gem of a collection and well worth a visit. Undergraduates
and medical students have used items in the collection
for their research projects.
Special Collections
in the Main Library
Special Collections houses rare books, various manuscript collections,
and a very large number of items that document the history of the University
of Iowa, including old catalogs of the medical school, hospital reports
and faculty materials.
Iowa
Women's Archives (IWA)
Located in the Main Library, 3rd floor southeast, the IWA holds manuscript
collections donated by Iowa-connected women and women's organizations,
some of which bear on the health sciences, particularly nursing.
State
Historical Society of Iowa
There are many wonderful collections in the library as well
as in the department of special collections that could be used
for projects in the history of medicine in Iowa. Special collections
is open from Tuesday to Friday, while the library is open from
Tuesday to Saturday. The library has volumes and volumes of
Iowa newspapers on microfilm, for example, as well as books,
city directories and other materials. The catalog for manuscript
materials is not yet on-line, so you have to use the card catalog
in the special collections area. The main library and archive
is in Des Moines, but there are significant collections in
the Iowa City branch at 402 Iowa Ave., Iowa City, IA 53340 (tel.
335-3916).
