The History of Medicine in Western Society

Selected internet sites and open access bibliographical indices

It now takes nearly a full-time effort to keep up with all of the online information that could be useful for doing research projects in the history of medicine. The following are among the most reputable and supported sites for tracking down references and images.

The National Library of Medicine

The National Library of Medicine has a History of Medicine Division which has tried to keep up with the changing demands for information. Until recently, the History of Medicine Division supported a separate online database, which took over from a printed Bibliography in the History of Medicine, for current literature on the history of medicine. This database, Histline, closed to new entries in the summer of 2000. New entries, and the items in the existing Histline, are being added to the main NLM databases. These are accessed through PubMed. The National Library of Medicine's own catalog of materials, LocatorPlus, can be useful when looking for titles that the University of Iowa does not have.

Images from the History of Medicine
The History of Medicine Division also has an image database, as well as resources on how to find other images on historical subjects.

Index-Catalogue of the Library of the Surgeon-General's Office, United States Army.
Published in 5 series in 61 volumes from 1880 to 1961. This is a fabulous resource for historians, recently put on line with partly through the efforts of the American Association for the History of Medicine. The print versions are still vital resources, as well, and they are on the shelves in Hardin Library.

Search tip: Figuring out the titles of journals from their abbreviations given in the Index-Catalogue

Library of Congress
The catalog of the Library of Congress is enormous. You can search it for published books, pamphets and journals; it is not an index to periodical (journal) literature, so references to articles in journals will not appear. The Library of Congress also hosts a collection called "American Memory," which contains "America's story in sound, words and pictures." This is rather like an on-line slide show, and there are some items about health.

The Wellcome Library: MedHist - Internet gateway
The Wellcome Library: Catalog and bibliographic resources
The Wellcome Trust, UK, is a major foundation that supports medical research. Henry Wellcome, who founded the Wellcome pharmaceutical company (now Glaxco), thought that the history of the health sciences was very important for physicans and scientists to appreciate and pursue. The Wellcome Library is one of the formost world centers for research in the history of medicine.
