Students spent the second half of the semester applying their skills in computer-assisted reporting and journalism to team projects. These projects combined analysis of public record databases with traditional reporting technques (other research, interviewing) to produce either (a) a main story with sidebars or (b) a series of stories on one subject.
Past students tended to build their projects on databases obtained in Johnson county, with the resulting stories also written for Iowa City audiences. This year, students all chose state level data and wrote stories for audiences geographically broader than Iowa City.
Although we do not teach web page skills in the course, three of the four teams decided to use a web format for their projects. The fourth is text based. All four of the projects can be seen through the links below:
