About This Class

ABOUT THIS COURSE: An online component has become all but mandatory for a media organization, and proficiency in using online tools and resources is expected of every media professional. This course provides experience in producing journalism for the web, as well as in using the medium as a tool for journalistic investigation. It also offers a look at the legal, economic, social and ethical environment in which the web is evolving as an outlet for good journalism.

When you graduate from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, you will leave with expertise in and knowledge about a set of essential professional values and competencies, known as the “Iowa Dozen.” This course focuses on several components of the Iowa Dozen, including:

  • Learning to conduct research and gather information responsibly, to edit and evaluate with care, and to use media technologies thoughtfully.

  • Valuing First Amendment principles for all individuals and groups, along with creativity and independence, and truth, accuracy and fairness.

  • Exploring the history, structure and economy of media institutions, particularly as they wrestle with adaptations to an online environment.
