ABOUT
THIS COURSE: An online
component has become all but mandatory for a media organization,
and proficiency in using online tools
and resources is expected of every media professional. This course
provides experience in producing journalism for the web, as well
as in using the medium as a tool for journalistic investigation.
It also offers a look at the legal, economic, social and ethical
environment in which the web is evolving as an outlet for good
journalism.
When you graduate
from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, you will
leave with expertise in and knowledge about a set of essential
professional values and competencies, known as the “Iowa
Dozen.” This
course focuses on several components of the Iowa Dozen, including:
- Learning
to conduct research and gather information responsibly, to
edit and evaluate with care, and to use media
technologies thoughtfully.
- Valuing
First Amendment principles for all individuals and groups, along
with creativity and independence, and truth,
accuracy and
fairness.
- Exploring
the history, structure and economy of media institutions, particularly
as they wrestle with adaptations
to an online environment.
