It
is never too late to get involved. Monday, the student activities
fair in Hubbard Park provided the perfect opportunity.
Organizers
of the event said they hoped to change the alarming statistic
that 80 percent of UI freshmen want to get involved
in campus activities, but only 20 percent do. The fair was
an even greater success than the organizers had hoped.
"This
is the first time in years it has gone over this well," said
organizer Cassie Brasseur. "Maybe this will help us
bring back student involvement and excitement."
The
event was organized by Brasseur, along with Katherine
Hershey, Emily Derrico, Kelsey Farkvam and Bill Nelson, director
of the UI Office
of Student Life. Nelson said that only eight student
organizations showed up last year, but a little more than one-third
of
the organizations participated this year.
"I
stopped by because of the location," said
freshman Erin Huebscher. "It was right where I was walking
anyway, and I really got some good ideas for things to do."
In
addition to the central location, Brasseur attributed the fair's
success to the free food and creative presentations
by various
organizations. Several won prizes for their ideas. |
