The purpose of this exploratory study is to examine a new type of fan fiction that has been produced as the result of the television show, The L Word. Through online interviews with award-winning fan fiction authors, which focus on the reasons why the authors write and publish their stories at the The L Word Fansite, this paper will begin to establish the extent to which the show’s themes are being challenged or reinforced within the fan fiction. It also considers how interaction via online space impacts the sense of community created through the web site.
