Recital Information
1. Non-majors have no recital requirements, though a half recital
is recommended.Recital Information2. BA viola majors have no formal
University recital requirement, though there is a Studio requirement of at least
a half recital for graduation.
3. 025:154 Senior Recital (Full recital required for graduation
with the BM degree)
4. 025:402 Master of Arts Recital (1 Full recital required for
graduation with the MA degree)
5. 025:503 Doctor of Musical Arts Recital (1 Qualifying and 3
Full recitals required for graduationg with the DMA degree -- Qualifying Recital
may be given additional credit towards the first Full recital if recital jury
deems appropriate)
Audition Repertoire:
025:169, Sec. 059 This course is designed to study the standard orchestral
repertoire used in orchestral auditioning. We also review audition procedures,
writing a 1-page résumé, and discuss general topics related to
audition procedures. The class is arranged according to registrants' schedules
and is offered each semester. It is encouraged that all undergraduate majors
take this course at least 2 semesters; the course is required for graduate viola
majors for at least 4 semesters. We conduct the course in the form of a masterclass
with class critique and participation.
Viola Ensemble:025:188, Sec. 059 (String Chamber Music -- please make sure to use the Section # when registering) The Viola Ensemble requires instructor permission. This course is in supplement to any string area chamber music requirements, and does not replace any current area requirements.
Chamber Music:025:188 (Section Number is the coach's Instructor
Number)
Undergraduates: Though chamber music is not a University requirement
towards the BA or BM degrees, it is highly encouraged and may be a studio requirement.
Graduates: It is a studio requirement that all viola majors participate
in at least one chamber ensemble during each semester that they are registered
(excluding Viola Ensemble). Petitions for exception may be submitted to Prof.
Rutledge.
Other String Area Course Requirements:
025:211 Advanced String Methods and Materials, Main Instructor: Prof. Rutledge (This course is offered in the Fall semester of each year. It is designed as an overview of the various pedagogical methods of each string instrument, and their associated source materials.)
025:? String Literature, Main Instructor: Prof. Vogel (This course can vary from semester to semester in content, but will generally focus on the standard chamber music repertoire for strings.)
