| 5 | Central Europe Review |
Central Europe
|
This online journal comes out weekly so it is updated at least that often. It has been online since 1999. From the homepage, you can follow links to opinion pieces, features, news articles, book reviews, and archives. There is also a separate list of related links that allow you to go directly to sites of several categories, including: academic journals, regional publishers, broadcasting, and about ten others. They were easy to access and those I looked at were very useful, providing more specific information than the site itself was set up to do. The Central Europe Review has received the Net Media 2000 for excellence in European online journalism. |

This is a very large site. It encompasses a lot of material as well as links to much more. This seems to be one of the leading web sites for this genre, judging on the volume of information. This site is extremely well maintained and updated. Among others, it was named "NetGuide's Best of the Web: Site Details, Central Europe Online: five stars" and MSN's "Pick of the Day." |

Czech Republic
|
The intent of the publisher is to provide an online source for geocentric news, information, products, and services that address the needs of international business persons, students, immigrants, and tourists. There are dozens of extensive links accessible at this web site. Research is available about anything from economic policies, trade practices, politics, art, entertainment, and even news links for individuals that like to read their news in the Czech language. The "Political Environment" link is perhaps most relevant to our class in that it provides general and more in depth information pertaining to the governmental and electoral structure of the Czech Republic. It also revealed some detailed information about the US-Czech relationship. The site's layout is organized by category. The direct links provided are helpful, and prevent having to go through multiple pages and links to find what you want. |
| 4 | Prague Watchdog |
Eastern Europe
|
The intent is to provide reports about human rights, humanitarian aid conditions and media coverage on the formerly Soviet-controlled eastern bloc countries. It is large and comprehensive. The site's reports mainly come from people that live in the region and are written in news style. What captured my interest are the site's reports on the biases committed by the mainstream media in the region. |

Post-Soviet societies

Visual presentation is a key to this website. The whole site is documented by great black and white photographs. The site is fairly large but is organized comprehensively, everything is professionally done and very user friendly. The introduction begins in 1956 when the author was born, and provides a brief history of that year and its significance overall effect on the cold war, with Khrushev denouncing Stalin, etc. The author also tells how he was led to believe that the government in the Soviet Union intended to destroy the country's way of life and eliminate personal freedom. Following the introduction, the site takes you through a pictorial journey through many of the countries in the former Soviet Bloc. Suau succeeds in portraying the despotic way of life in much of eastern Europe and Eurasia. |

With launching this site we aim to establish an impartial channel of information about Chechnya, free of any propaganda and open to any constructive criticism, comments and views, focusing on daily news, humanitarian catastrophe and ways to help civilians, but also offering geographical, historic and cultural information on this small country in the Caucasus.
