Calculation
of the Final Grade
|
Each is three pages long and each is worth 15% of the final grade. Each will be corrected once your section leader and then revised and resubmitted for the final grade. The grade for each paper will be divided among the two versions. For the first paper, the first version will contribute 50% to the grade for the paper, the final version will contribute 50%. For the second paper, the first version will contribute 70% to the grade for the paper and the final version 30%. The first version, with your section leader's corrections, should be handed in along with the second version. Grades for the papers will be based primarily on the structure of the argument, but we will also have to grade for expression in Spanish to the extent that it impedes effective communication of your argument.
15% - Mid-Term Exam
20 % - Final Exam
This will be a comprehensive exam covering all the material in the course. It will follow the format of the midterm with the addition of one longer essay question exam. I will consider making alternate arrangements to take the mid-term for students with travel plans or other personal obligations if you contact me before the date indicated on our calendar. After that date, only students participating in officially sponsored UI extra-curricular activities, experiencing for family or medical emergencies, or students with multiple final exams for that day may expect to arrange alterante exam times. Please see the UI's policy on final exams in the Schedule of Courses to see if you qualify for an accomodation. I understand that this is a very late time period on the last day of finals week, but this is the time the University has assigned us. Please make your summer plans accordingly.
10% - Oral Presentations
Each student will participate in one oral presentation. The oral presentations will be done in pairs. Students will have an opportunity to sign-up for oral exam dates during the second or third week of class.
10% - Quizzes, In-Class Assignments, and Short Papers
At the discretion of each section leader, pop-quizzes may be given over any reading or in-class writing assignments may be used to facilitate the progress of our discussions. Additionally, there will be three short (one-page) papers. Please refer to the course calendar for the specific dates of these papers.
15% - Participation
Participation includes your preparedness for class. In this regard, you should be ready to respond to the study questions for each reading, with specific reference to the texts, and be able to participate fully in group work or general discussions about the day's assignments. Participation also includes demonstrating a supportive attitude towards other students: listening attentively, disagreeing respectfully, collaborating responsibly on group projects, engaging with oral presentations, avoiding disruptive behavior, etc.. All in-class communication will be conducted in Spanish, including all communications between students during class times.

Attendance
|
Attendance at the lectures will be expected of every student. Neither the professor nor the teaching assistants will be available to summarize the content of the lectures. Students should make other arrangements (eg, contact a classmate) to inform themselves of the lecture content for missed days.
Attendance at the Friday discussions sections will be mandatory. Students will lose two percentage points off their final grade for the class for each unexcused absence in the Friday discussion sections. In-class work cannot be made-up for unexcused absences. Excused absences are family emergencies, medical emergencies confirmed by signed statement from a qualified health-care professional, and officially sponsored UI extra-curricular activies. If you arrive late, it is your responsibility to check with the instructor after class to make sure you have not been marked absent.
|
Extra-Credit
|
Extra-credit assignments imply work beyond the criteria of evaluation established at the start of the semester. They are thus by definition unfair to students who have successfully completed the course with the expectation of being evaluated in the same manner as their peers. No extra-credit assignments will be considered for this course.
