Tornado Update. The tornado that hit Iowa City on Thursday night caused us to lose a day of class on Friday. To make up for the content of that lost day, I will lecture on Tuesday, April 18th, about Carlos Fuentes's "Chac Mool." That means YOU MAY TURN IN YOUR SHORT PAPER ON THE STORY BY 3:00 PM TUESDAY, APRIL 18TH. We'll discuss Guillén's poem, "Balada de los dos abuelos," Thursday, April 20th and Fridah, April 21st. The other paper deadlines for Fuentes will remain the same.

Spring Semester, 2006

Prior to Spring 2005, this course was offered as 35:125. It has been renumbered to 35:111. Please see the professor if you took 35:111 when it was "Introduction to Hispanic Linguistics" and have questions about your registration for "Readings in Spanish American Literature." Also, please be aware that if you previously took this course when it was numbered 35:125, you will NOT be able to receive credit for it again under a new number, even if ISIS allows you to register for the course again.

Course Objectives

· Improve Reading and Writing Skills in Spanish. Developing as a reader and writer in a non-native language is not the same process as developing these skills in your native language. A major focus of this course will be to improve students' abilities to read and write in Spanish through on-going practice and through specific strategies and exercises.

Maintain and Improve Oral Communications Skills in Spanish. Oral communication will be an integral part of this course. The lectures will require students to pay careful attention and engage with the information presented by the professor. The professor may also call upon people to respond to questions during lectures. The discussions sessions will offer students the opportunity to engage with each other and with the readings. Students will be required to work in small groups on an on-going basis and the discussions sections will function primarily through students-lead oral activies and group presentations.

· Introduce Aspects of Spanish American Literature and Culture. The culture of Spanish America will be treated through a small portion of Spanish American literature, which will be contextualized in a series of social and historical frameworks. Specific emphasis will be placed throughout the semester on the different ways in which intellectuals from Spanish America have struggled to articulate national cultures through literature or have questioned the possibility of doing so.

· Improve Skills in Analyzing Literary Works. The analysis of literary works will offer students a chance to improve their understanding of Spanish and to gain insight into the function of all literature and language as means of communication.

Required Texts - Available at Iowa Book and Supply (corner of Clinton and Iowa Aves)
