Answer to Practice Problem #4 for Passage of Xenobiotics Across Biological Membranes Tutorial:
a)
increased
A reduced expression of p-glycoprotein would result in less p-glycoprotein in the intestinal cells through which drug must travel as it is absorbed. Since p-glycoprotein is an efflux protein, its presence results in a reduced oral bioavailability of drugs. Less p-glycoprotein would mean more drug gets through the intestinal cells and into the systemic circulation. Hence, oral bioavailability will be increased.
