The Doctor
William Hurt is the doctor in this 1991 depiction of the unempathetic surgeon transformed by his own experience with the medical system as a patient.
Questions to consider:
- how does Dr. Jack manage to insulate himself at the beginning of the movie from the understanding and insights that he LATER feels?
- what experiences force Dr. Jack to change? how much is due to his own condition and how much to his relationship with June?
- compare Dr. Jack to our other film surgeons ( the Interns, M*A*S*H). Is the character he represents just Hollywood's continuing them of what surgeons are like, or is there some "reality" here?
