CALL FOR ABSTRACTS AND INTEREST IN ATTENDING

5th International Symposium on
Snow Removal and Ice Control Technology
Roanoke, Virginia, September 5-9, 2000

 

Transportation Research Board Committee A3C09, "Winter Maintenance" is organizing the Fifth International Symposium on Snow Removal and Ice Control Technology to be held September 5-9, 2000 in Roanoke, Virginia with plans for cooperative involvement from other national and international organizations. The objective of the symposium is to provide a forum for the exchange of information about the state-of-the-art in research and technology applications to improve snow removal and ice control operations in transportation systems.

A registration fee will be required of all who attend with a reduced fee for A3C09 Committee members and those listed in the program. The preliminary program with Symposium and hotel registration information will be available in early 2000.

Topic Areas

Papers are being solicited for presentation at the symposium. Please consider submitting results of recent research or technological innovation involving snow removal and ice control for transportation systems that (a) are expected to provide operational improvements, (b) have recently been applied to achieve improvements, or (c) are advancing the state-of-the-art in this field. The following subject areas have been identified as particularly topical at this time:

o Policy and Management including contract forces, insurance tools for winter maintenance cost control and public relations tools
o Development and Use of Customer Based Performance Measures including benchmarking techniques to ensure quality performance
o Environmental Issues including chemicals and abrasives used in de-icing and anti-icing activities
o Role of Innovative Equipment
o IVHS/ITS Technologies including AVL, RWIS, GPS and GIS applications, and the effectiveness of these technologies
o Large Volume Snow Control including snow fences and drift control, avalanche control, and visibility issues

This list is not intended to be all-inclusive and the program committee will consider all papers appropriate to the subject.

Due Dates

Interested authors should submit (a) an abstract of not more than 500 words and (b) a 100-word biographical sketch via email to SNOW2000@nas.edu with "Abstract" listed in the subject line by November 1, 1999. Submission of computer files on a diskette can be mailed to Frank N. Lisle, Engineer of Maintenance, Transportation Research Board, 2101 Constitution Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20418, USA. Authors will be advised by February 1, 2000 of the Program Committee's decision, and authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to make a presentation at the Symposium. Full manuscripts will be required by July 1, 2000. Peer reviews of papers will be required before consideration for publication in the TRB Research Record Series.
