Suggested Components of a Philosophy of Teaching Statement

Nancy Chism suggests that your statement describe your thoughts on:

  1. How learning takes place. One way to approach this is by way of developing a metaphor for learning.
  2. What teaching is. This should, of course be consistent with how you think learning takes place.
  3. Goals for students. Why are you doing what you are doing? What do you hope your students will get from your efforts?
  4. How your philosophy is enacted in your practice. This is your chance to talk about what you do, or plan to do, to make your philosophy real.
