- instruct students in fundamental concepts of playing wind and percussion instruments.
- instruct students in how to teach beginning instrumentalists.

Students register 3 times for Instrumental Techniques (2 s.h. each time)—a fall semester for percussion and two spring semesters for the brass and woodwinds.
Section 001 Percussion/Flute
- In the fall semester students study percussion for 10 weeks and flute for 5 weeks with graduate teaching assistants.
Section 002 Brass and Section 003 Woodwinds
- In spring semesters studio faculty lecture (one professor per week) during first 5 weeks (Session 1).
- During Sessions 2 and 3, students learn 2 instruments, one per session, with a graduate teaching assistant. Students in Section 002 Brass should study a high brass and a low brass instrument. Students in Section 003 Woodwinds should study a single reed and a double reed instrument.

Grade points will be averaged for a final grade, determined by this scale:
A+ = 4.01-4.33 A = 3.80-4.00 A- = 3.51-3.79
B+ = 3.33-3.50 B = 3.00-3.32 B- = 2.67-2.99
C+ = 2.33-2.66 C = 2.00-2.32 C- = 1.67-1.99
D+ = 1.33-1.66 D = 1.00-1.32 D- = 0.67-.99
F = 0.00-0.66
University regulations state that instructors may use an incomplete marking only if the unfinished part of the student’s work is small, the work is unfinished for reasons acceptable to the instructor, and the student’s standing in the course is satisfactory. All arrangements for an incomplete must be approved prior to the last day of each session by Dr. Coffman.
