The Department of Pediatric Dentistry presently operates in two facilities. One is the pediatric dentistry clinic in the Dental Science Building and the other is the pediatric dentistry clinic at Center for Disabilities and Development (formerly The University Hospital School).

Dental Science Building
The major site for undergraduate instruction is the clinic in the Dental Science Building. The contemporary open bay design was constructed in 1973. There are 15 operatories in the open area and one chair in an enclosed “quiet operatory”. Dispensary services are provided in a center aisle. Each operatory has been equipped with a connection to the collegiate intranet and the world wide web. This allows students to access the Oral Health Information System (OHIS) to check on patient scheduling and to enter treatment plans. A separate room is available for preventive dentistry instruction and demonstrations.

Center for Disabilities and Development
The faculty practice is located in the pediatric dentistry clinic in the Center for Disabilities and Development. This clinic contains 4 chairs in an open bay design, one enclosed “quiet operatory”, dispensary, radiology room, dark room, dental laboratory and record room. This clinic has undergone a number of renovations over the years with the last in 2001. Renovations completed in 1998 included an update in the equipment, cabinetry and interior decorating. The most recent renovation provided additional space for radiology and records and expanded and updated the patient waiting area.

Children’s Hospital of Iowa
The Children’s Hospital of Iowa is located within the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Care is provided to children in the Pediatrics department and in a number of Pediatric sub-specialty programs. In addition to the time residents spend treating patients in both of the pediatric dentistry clinics, they have a number of responsibilities at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Children’s Hospital of Iowa. These responsibilities include fabrication of palatal stabilizing devices for very low birth weight babies, pre-bone marrow transplant screenings, general anesthesia rotation, treatment of children in the Hospital Dentistry clinic and rotations in genetics, pediatrics and the emergency room.
