Brief Professional Resume:   Dr. Dawson joined The University of Iowa College of Dentistry in July 2001.  She is a professor in the department of Preventive and Community Dentistry and the Director of Biostatistics.

Teaching Responsibilities:  Dr. Dawson serves as course director for Statistical Methods in Dental Research (111:212).  She will also be responsible for individual presentations or short series of lectures in both predoctoral and graduate courses such as the D1 Cariology course and the Research Mini-Course for the predoctoral students.   In the future, Dr. Dawson will be teaching parts of other graduate courses and will provide a short course in biostatistics for predoctoral students. 

Research Activities:  Dr. Dawson’s area of research focuses on statistical genetic modeling of human disorders, particularly in the areas of  dental disorders, immune and inflammatory disorders and developmental disorders; statistical methods in human genetics, including applications in the areas of delayed onset disorders and ascertainment bias; statistical evaluation of biomedical studies, particularly longitudinal studies and investigations of aging and development; population-based models; and classification and risk assessment problems.

National or International Professional Appointments or Activities:  Dr. Dawson is a member of the Clinical Aging Study Section of the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health, and has served as ad hoc reviewer for the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.  She has served since 1997 as an appointee of the Cooperative Studies Evaluation Committee for the Health Services Research and Development Service, Veterans Health Administration Research Program, Department of Veterans Affairs, Washington, D.C.  She has served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Immigrant Health (1999-2001) and as Consulting Editor of the journal Health Psychology (1999-2001).  She was an invited participant and primary representative of the American Team, International Centenarian Studies Group, European Science Foundation Workshop: Autonomy Versus Dependence in the Oldest Old, Schlosshotel auf der Burg Hirschhorn and Heidelberg University, Germany, July 3-6, 1999.  She has served as ad hoc reviewer for scholarly journals including the American Journal of Human Genetics, Experimental Aging Research, Genetic Epidemiology, the Journal of Dental Research, and the Journal of Gerontology.  She received the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science 1987 Research Award for Most Outstanding Paper.  Dr. Dawson is a member of the American Statistical Association, in which she has served elective office as Program Chair for Teaching of Statistics in the Health Sciences (1995-1996), Representative to the Council of Sections (1995-1998), and Chair of the Section on Statistics in Epidemiology (2000); she will take office as Vice-Chair of the Council of Sections Governing Board in 2002-2004.  Dr. Dawson is also a member of the American Society of Human Genetics and the International Genetic Epidemiology Society.
