Brief Professional Resume: Dr. Nowak joined The University of Iowa College of Dentistry in July
1973. He was the director
of the division of Pediatric Dentistry in the Department of Hospital
Dentistry from July 1977 to December 1994.
He served as the director of the graduate program in pediatric
dentistry from October 1995 to December 1998.
He is currently an emeritus faculty member in the departments
of pediatric dentistry and pediatrics.
Teaching
Responsibilities: Dr. Nowak is currently retired and does not
have any clinical or didactic teaching responsibilities. He still interacts with the residents on a
regular basis and gives special seminars a few times each year.
Research Activities:
Dr. Nowak’s area of research focuses on the oral health
of children with special needs and the effects of non-nutritive
sucking behaviors on the oral health and oral development of infants
and children.
National or International Professional Appointments
or Activities: Dr.
Nowak continues to be very involved in the profession of pediatric
dentistry at both a national and local level.
In 1996-1997, he served as the president of the American
Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and was recently appointed as the
Executive Director for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Ectodermal
Dysplasia Foundation, is a consultant for the National Training
Institute for Child Care Health Consultants and is the editor
for The Handbook (a publication of the AAPD) and Practical
Reviews in Pediatric Dentistry.
He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry,
the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Association
of Dental Research.
