Goal I:  Provide postdoctoral training of dentists in the primary care specialties of pediatric dentistry and dental public health for leadership roles in education, research, public health administration, advocacy, public service and clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE A:  Recruit two highly qualified individuals each year into Iowa’s combined training program in pediatric dentistry and dental public health.

OBJECTIVE B:  Prepare pediatric dentistry residents to be competent in essential clinical and didactic domains of contemporary pediatric dentistry.

OBJECTIVE C:  Provide formal training in the specialty of dental public health, culminating with a research thesis blending both dental public health and pediatric dentistry themes.

OBJECTIVE D: Facilitate the development of leadership skills.

OBJECTIVE E:  Develop experience and appreciation for the delivery of dental care in community-based outreach programs with an emphasis on family-centered, comprehensive, interdisciplinary, coordinated care.

Goal II:  Develop and disseminate curricula, teaching models, and other educational resources to enhance MCH oral health programs. 

OBJECTIVE A:  Disseminate Iowa’s combined Pediatric Dentistry / Dental Public Health curriculum to other advanced training programs in Pediatric Dentistry, and to Schools of Public Health.

OBJECTIVE B: Develop and disseminate resource materials promoting Iowa’s model Infant Oral Health Program.

OBJECTIVE C: Conduct two conferences for all MCH dental trainees and program faculty nationwide to share curricular and programmatic developments and foster networking among faculty and trainees across programs.

Goal III:  Provide continuing education, consultation and technical assistance in pediatric oral health that address the needs of the MCH community.

OBJECTIVE A:  Offer and provide consultation and technical assistance to dentistry training programs that are in the early stages of developing pediatric-focused programs.

OBJECTIVE B:  Design and conduct continuing education courses for dentists, physicians and other health care providers serving the MCH community on issues related to oral health.

OBJECTIVE C:  Enhance and maintain the Center’s web site as a means for providing technical assistance in pediatric oral health that addresses the needs of the MCH community.

OBJECTIVE D: Update Iowa’s EPSDT provider registry to include specialists (orthodontists, endodontists and oral surgeons) who are willing to see children at age one, children with developmental disabilities, and children enrolled in Medicaid.

OBJECTIVE E:  Provide ongoing consultation and technical assistance in oral health at the national, regional, and local level.

Goal IV:  Evaluate program effectiveness and develop plan for program improvement.

OBJECTIVE A:  Establish an advisory committee to evaluate program effectiveness and recommend changes for improvement.

OBJECTIVE B:  Evaluate individual trainee progress throughout training.

OBJECTIVE C:  Survey program alumni regarding career paths, and accomplishments related to MCH objectives.
