Family Law
Spring 2007
Professor Ann Laquer Estin
General Information
This is a survey course considering many aspects of the law regulating families and children. The text will be Cases and Problems in Domestic Relations, Clark and Estin, (7th ed. 2005), and there are supplemental materials available in the ISBA Bookstore. Classes will meet on Wednesdays from 8:00 am to 9 am, and Thursdays and Fridays from 8:40 am to 10:10 am in Room 225. Class assignments are listed in the outline below. Attendance and participation may be counted toward your grade under my "present/prepared" policy, which is explained in a separate handout.
My office is in Room 416, and I will generally be available there for office hours Wednesday mornings between 9:30 and 11:30 am. I am also happy to talk with you after class, or by appointment. If you need to reach me, my office phone number is 335-6850, and my email address is ann-estin@uiowa.edu.
You will be permitted to consult the casebook, supplemental materials, and your class notes or outlines during the final examination, which is scheduled for Friday, April 27. Approximately one third of the exam will be multiple choice, and the remaining two thirds will be an essay exam. Sample multiple choice and essay exam questions are available through my web page.
Students in this class may choose, but will not be required, to write the essay
portions of their final exams on laptop computers. Those choosing to do so,
must supply their own computers, which must meet certain specifications, and
use the SecurExam software sold in the ISBA Bookstore. Information on those
specifications and on the software may be found at http//www.law.uiowa.edu/exams/laptopexams.php.
