Steroid Hormones

Both men and women have receptors for androgen and estrogen in the brain; one region has estrogen receptors only in women.

As might be expected from the presence of the receptors, both men and women make both androgen and estrogen; here are the cells that do it.

These hormones affect behavior, in monkeys and humans.

Because steroid hormones act at so many levels, their effects may take seconds to weeks to be observed.

The control of steroid hormone synthesis is regulated by feedback between the brain and glands.

The metabolism of steroids is complex (close this window to return);
