Before you begin your Dreamweaver setup, you must first create an empty folder on your H-drive (or local computer if you own one and have the Dreamweaver program) to hold all the elements of your website. On all the computers I use, I have created an empty folder called "SottoMyWeb." Create this folder as the first step of setting up any site. Within this folder, it is a good idea to create another folder called Images, where you will store all your pictures and graphics. As your site grows, good organization is very important and all of your pages and images need to be together.
Once your site folder and Images subfolder are created, start up the Dreamweaver application. To set up a new site in Dreamweaver, select the New Site option from the Site menu:

You will see this Site Setup dialog box:

When you define your site, you will have to enter specific information for local storage and for the destination for uploading your local pages.
When I defined the local information, I browsed to my "SottoMyWeb" folder by clicking on the folder icon to the right of the box in order to fill in the "Local Root Folder" information. Here's the example from my computer:
![]()

Next click on the Servers category (second on the list) and click on the plus sign (+) to add the MyWeb server and account directory information.

This is the screen that comes up after you click the plus sign and in which you will set up the remote/host server information:

1. Type a name into the Server Name box. (I suggest something like MyWeb Server).
2. Set the Connect using setting to SFTP.
3. For SFTP Address enter: sftp.iowa.uiowa.edu
4. For Username enter "iowa" followed by \ (a backward slash) followed by your HawkID: iowa\HawkID (e.g., iowa\sotto).
5. In the Password box, type your HawkID password. If you are working on your own private/personal computer, check the Save box, so you don't have to type in your password ever time you upload a file. For public computers it's generally better not to have this saved. However, we are going to export/save our settings to a secure file, so for now click Save.
6. In the root directory Root Directory box, enter "myweb" followed by / (a forward slash) followed by your HawkID: myweb/HawkID (e.g., myweb/sotto).
7. In the Web URL box, type http://myweb.uiowa.edu/yourHawkID (e.g., mine reads http://myweb.uiowa.edu/sotto/)
8. Click on the Test button to see if your connection information works. You should get a popup message that your connection to the server was successful. If you don't get this message, then you probably have an error somewhere in the information you typed in. Make sure that the direction of the slashes in the names and directory info match the picture.
9. Click on the Save button at the bottom of the box and then click the Save button again in the original window.
This exits you to the list of defined Dreamweaver sites in the Manage
Sites dialog box:

Now we are going to Export your site definition and settings to a special file, which Dreamweaver creates with the extension .STE so that you can Import the settings later to avoid having to fill out the information all over again each time you work at a new machine. This file will be saved on your H-drive so that you can always find it.
1. Click on the ExportÉ button. You will get the following dialog box:

2. Leave the default setting (first option) and click the OK button.
3. You will then be presented with another dialog box that will allow you to save your exported settings. Navigate to your H-drive and type in a filename that reminds you that it is a settings (.ste) file and then click the Save button:
