October (dir. S. Eisenstein, 1927)

Commissioned by the Soviet government in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Revolution, this film, also released as Ten Days That Shook The World, is one of several made that year to depict the turmoil of 1917. As you are reading a detailed examination of this film (Taylor), I will not provide much of a summary. Do note, however, that the film moves across several major turning points in the history of 1917: the overthrow of the tsar in February 1917, Lenin's arrival in Finland Station in April, the unrest of the July Days, the Kornilov Affair, and the October Revolution itself. See the Suny text for a detailed discussion of these events.
