READINGS
Required readings have been assigned to enhance your understanding and interpretation of the films presented. To provide some context for understanding these films, I have assigned much of a general Soviet history textbook (Suny), as well as a survey of Soviet film history (Kenez) and an extensive coursepak. In addition to contextualizing the films in the broader sweep of Soviet and Russian history, these writings, particularly those in the coursepak, give insight into how to write about film. You should look to the readings not only for information, but for models of inquiry and analysis.
Books are available for purchase at the IMU Bookstore. The courspak is for sale at Technigraphics, on the Ped Mall. All readings are also available on reserve at the Main Library.
Kenez, Peter. Cinema and Soviet Society: From the Revolution
to the Death of Stalin.
Suny, Ronald Grigor. The Soviet Experiment.
Taylor, Richard. October.
Reading assignments are due at the start of each week. All readings from course books are identified by the last name of the author. Coursepak readings are denoted by (CP). Please note that some of the readings in the coursepak are slightly out of order. Be sure to check your syllabus carefully to determine what readings are due in any given week.
