Cambus IS students. Cambus is, and always has been, student operated. Currently, 160 dedicated UI students operate the on-campus transit service. Consequently, Cambus is designed by and for student employees.
Cambus is always looking for friendly people. To qualify you must be a UI student, have a good driving record, and be available for at least two semesters. Experience is not required - we train!
Job applications are available at the Cambus Office (across from the Rec Bldg on Stadium Drive), on all buses, and on the Cambus website. The Personnel Supervisor (a student) does all the interviewing and hiring. For information, stop in at the Cambus Office or call 335-8633. Federally mandated drug and alcohol testing is required. We strive to maintain a diverse workforce.
You CAN drive a bus. It may be big but that's what makes it fun. The skills are quickly obtainable and most find it much less difficult than they ever imagined. Training is one-on-one with a fellow student and at your own pace. Big, small, short, tall, strong, weak, freshman, grad - they all have and do drive a bus.
Flexible Schedule. The schedule is designed for students. The shifts are short and varied (mornings, daytime, nights and weekends). It's easy to get time off and you are not required to work over breaks.
Convenient Location. Cambus is on-campus so it's easy to mix work and classes.
Good Pay & Raises-starting driver $10.20/hr. In addition, there are PAY INCREASES every 6 months. The top pay for a driver is $12.20/hr. Also, there is no FICA deduction of 7.6% during academic sessions because it is a UI student job.
Many Advancement Opportunities. Everyone at Cambus starts as a driver, however, there are 26 "support" positions into which people can get promoted. These include dispatchers, trainers, maintenance assistants, clerks, and supervisor positions. A raise and great experience comes with these positions. Top pay at Cambus is $13.75.
