Meeting Notes - February 16, 2012

Call to order
Helen Jameson and Carly Armour, Co-Chairs called meeting to order at 12pm.

  1. Eli Clare - Multicultural Speaker  - April 5 and 6

    • Performance and Reading: "Gawking, Gaping, Staring"
      7:00-8:30pm with a reception following speaking engagement from 8:30-10pm at WRAC (130 N. Madison St across from IMU; Parking available at IMU Ramp). All are welcome!
      Location: University of Iowa Old Capitol Senate Chambers (Map:

    • Public Workshop: "At the Intersections of Queerness & Disability" What issues do disabled LGBTQ peoples face? What are the connections among ableism, homophobia, and transphobia? How do issues around queer disability identities fit into a broader intersectional social justice framework? Join Eli for a facilitated dialogue about these questions and more.

  2. Co-Chair resignation by Helen Jameson
    • CDA is finding another Co-Chair.
    • By-laws will be reviewed to confirm options.

  3. Council on Disability Awareness – Future Projects
    • Discussed the mission and direction CDA is going taking now and in the future
    • Possible future projects:
      • “Being Proactive instead of Reactive”
      • Increasing Awareness and Advocating for:
        • Universal Design for Parking
        • Universal Design for New Buildings
        • Captioning options in sports arenas
      • Ability for CDA to provide comments to Facilities Management
    • Carly will set up a meeting within two weeks for Brian Manternach, Facilities Management to present and allow members to give comments and concerns on new buildings being built.

  4. “Joggins for Noggins” March 31, Lower City Park – March’s Brain Injury Awareness Month
    • Announced by Bob Harding, UI Power Plant Staff and individual with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
    • Over 90,000 Iowans now live with an acquired brain injury.
    • Each year, the Brain Injury Association (BIA) of Iowa sponsors a fundraising event in Iowa City to raise funds and increase awareness about brain injuries.
    • This is the annual BIA run/walk/and roll 5K/Fun Run. The 5K run begins at 9am and the Fun Run starts at 10am rain or shine. Register before March 14 and you’ll be guaranteed a t-shirt and save $5 off the entry fee. The fee increases to $30 after March 14 or at the day of event. Registration:
    • CDA agreed to be a sponsor by marketing the event.
