Meeting Notes - October 20, 2011

Call to order
Helen Jameson, Co-Chair called meeting to order at 12pm.

  1. Murderball Film & Panel Rescheduled
    • CDA partnering with SportAbility and Student Disability Org.
    • Rescheduled to next year and will hopefully be at the Englert.   

  2. Paralympic Experience/Demo Rescheduled
    • Sponsored by SportAbility (www.sportabilityofiowa.org)
    • SportAbility’s note: “Many Paralympic athletes are attending the Pan American Games in Mexico, qualifying this week and are unable to attend the Paralympic Experience Sunday, October 23rd. A new date for this event will be announced in the very near future.  Let's wish our Paralympic Athletes best of luck as they begin their qualifying events for entry into the 2012 Paralympics in London!

  3. Regents Disability Summit
    • Was well attended/approximately 120 attendees.
    • Effort was made to get more local Community Colleges and local Agencies.
    • University of Northern Iowa will host next year

  4. UI Campus Disability Celebration  
    • Friday, October 28th, 2011 3:30-5pm
    • Georgina Dodge will be giving opening remarks.
    • President Mason will be giving the awards
    • Will have 8-9  5 minute highlights of things going on in the community.
    • “Braverman Scholarship” will be awarded
    • “Above & Beyond” award given to Faculty & Staff
    • CDA Writing Contest winner will be announced during the celebration- 5 minutes.
    • CDA Writing Contest Reception will be held after this from 5:15 -6pm.
      • Judges will share a few words about winners
      • Winners will be able to read their pieces.

  5. Holiday Feast Invitation to Diversity Councils
    • November 15th from 4-6pm at Old Brick, 26 East Market Street
    • RSVP mandatory. Confirmation to cde@uiowa.edu.

  7. Student Disability Organization - Expense
    • CDA will be covering $52.80 expense for SDO with funds from donation.

  8. LGBT Resource Center
    • Bathroom on first floor is a janitor's closet and inaccessible for those with disabilities.
    • Carly is working with the Director of Center for Student Involvement & Leadership (Bill Nelson) and Facilities Management (Brian Manternach) to have an accessible bathroom built.
    • Meeting will be set up soon with Tom Rocklin, VP of Student Services and Dr. Georgina Dodge, CDO.

  9. CDA Writing Contest
    • Winners have been selected and Carly will begin to notify them.
    • Possibly deadline is causing lower submissions due to students being busy during August & September.
    • Possibly send an electronic advertisement for the contest to any department with Electronic Bulletin Boards.
    • Request assistance from JD Mendenhall in Division of Performing Arts to assist with design of bulletins.

  10. Disability Awareness Speaker in April 2012
    • Proposal accepted: For CDA to collaborate with TransCollaborations, LGBTSFA & WRAC.
    • Carly & Helen will work with other Councils to submit joint funding request to cover $3,500 includes everything (travel, lodging, honorarium).
    • Speaker would be Eli Clare, possible schedule:
      • Thursday, April 5th 7-9pm (UI Main Library, Shambaugh Auditorium): "Gawking, Gaping, Staring"  Description: Disabled people, trans people, fat people, and people of color all know what it's like to be stared at. Through words and images, Eli explores the internal experiences of living in marked bodies and the external meanings of oppression and bodily difference. Format: This multi-media talk can be delivered as a lecture, an interactive presentation, or a workshop.

      • Friday, April 6th 1-3pm: (Iowa City Public Library, Room A) "At the Intersections of Queerness & Disability"  Description: What issues do disabled LGBTQ peoples face? What are the connections among ableism, homophobia, and transphobia? How do issues around queer disability identities fit into a broader intersectional social justice framework? Join Eli for a facilitated dialogue about these questions and more.  Format: Lecture, facilitated discussion, small group work.
