Graduate Specializations in Aging

Certificate in Aging Studies
At the graduate level, students across a range of disciplines may complete a certificate in aging studies by taking 21 semester hours in approved aging-related courses numbered 100 and above. Central courses include: Biology of Aging, Psychology of Aging, and Cultural Perspectives on Aging. Additional practicum and colloquia hours are required.

School of Social Work: End-of-life Services specialization
At the graduate level, students within the School of Social Work may earn an End-of-Life (EOL) Services specialization. Four new and/or revised courses as well as newly instituted stipends for advanced-level practicum students contribute to an end-of-life (EOL) specialization.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner: This program requires a minimum of 46 semester hours in approved courses and a minimum of 630 clinical practicum hours. Additional requirements apply.

Adult/Gerontological Health Nursing: This program requires 43 semester hours in approved courses and 450 clinical practicum hours. Additional requirements apply.

Adult and Older Adult Nursing: This 40 semester hour program is offered via the Iowa Communications Network (ICN).

Acute Care specialization: Under the leadership of wound-care specialist Rita Franz, efforts are underway to develop a 45 semester hour graduate level curriculum with approximately 1/3 of the curriculum dedicated to aging.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing

Gerontological Nursing Specialization: This program mandates 60 semester hours beyond the Master's level. Additional requirements apply.
