Graduate Specializations in Aging

 

  • Certificate in Aging Studies
    At the graduate level, students across a range of disciplines may complete a certificate in aging studies by taking 21 semester hours in approved aging-related courses numbered 100 and above.  Central courses include: Biology of Aging, Psychology of Aging, and Cultural Perspectives on Aging.  Additional practicum and colloquia hours are required. 

  • Master's of Public Health with an Aging Focus
    Students within the College of Public Health may elect a Master's in Public Health (MPH) degree with an Aging Focus by taking 39 semester hours in approved courses including 15 semester hours in selected courses with substantial aging content.  Also, students pursuing a MPH with an Aging Focus may additionally earn a certificate in aging studies by completing 45 semester hours with 21 in approved aging courses.

  • School of Social Work: End-of-life Services specialization
    At the graduate level, students within the School of Social Work may earn an End-of-Life (EOL) Services specialization.  Four new and/or revised courses as well as newly instituted stipends for advanced-level practicum students contribute to an end-of-life (EOL) specialization.

  • College of Nursing program options with Gerontological specializations

    Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner: This program requires a minimum of 46 semester hours in approved courses and a minimum of 630 clinical practicum hours.  Additional requirements apply.

    Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Adult/Gerontological Health Nursing: This program requires 43 semester hours in approved courses and 450 clinical practicum hours.  Additional requirements apply. 

    Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Adult and Older Adult Nursing: This 40 semester hour program is offered via the Iowa Communications Network (ICN). 

    Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with an Acute Care specialization: Under the leadership of wound-care specialist Rita Franz, efforts are underway to develop a 45 hours graduate level curriculum with approximately 1/3 of the curriculum dedicated to aging. Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Adult and Older Adult Nursing: This 40 semester hour program is offered via the Iowa Communications Network (ICN). 

    Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing with a Gerontological Nursing specialization: This program mandates 60 semester hours beyond the Master's level.  Additional requirements apply.
