History
The Parkin lectureship was endowed by a gift from the Retirement Research Foundation of Chicago, Illinois, in memory of Joseph Parkin, a retired Banker’s Life and Casualty Co. executive who had served as president of the Retirement Research Foundation in Chicago. The Retirement Research Foundation of Chicago is the nation’s largest private foundation devoted to aging and retirement issues, since 1986. The foundation makes approximately $6 million in grants each year to support programs, research and policy studies to improve the quality of life for older Americans.
Parkin was born on a farm outside Derby, Iowa in 1923 and attended the UI from 1940 – 1943, when he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served as an aerial navigator until 1945 and again from 1950-1952.
2006 Joe L. Parkin Lecture
The Joe L. Parkin Memorial Lecture on Aging is endowed through The University of Iowa Foundation by a gift from the Retirement Research Foundation of Chicago, Illinois, in memory of Mr. Parkin, former president of the Foundation who attending the University of Iowa. The Parkin lecture focuses on any aspect of research, practice or policy that affects the elderly population.

Graham D. Rowles, PhD
At the University of Kentucky, Dr. Rowles is Director, PhD Program in Gerontology; and Associate at the Center for Rural Health; and the Associate Director for Social & Behavioral Sciences Sanders-Brown Center on Aging. His research interests include aging in rural environments, elderly relocation and migration, long-term care and nursing home environments, and also the meaning of ‘place.’
