Student Success - Graduation Rates

Sue Aufderheide - Purdue
Director of Undecided students
  • Pilot program started 1996 - 150 students/advisor
  • Goal: Decrease changes among majors - In past 2.5 major changes/student Improve graduation and retention rate
  • Course 3 credits "Careers and Academic Planning" - Helps students learn how to make decisions via course exploration
  • Taught by advisors under direction of Professor in education
  • Follow (track) students via warehouse data base
  • We ask these students what they do NOT want to major in - then work with the remaining choices
Judi Roller - University of Wisconsin
Selectively of Admissions
  • Raising requirements has improved retention significantly
  • Retention from Freshman to Sophomore = 92%
  • 4 year graduate rate in the 80%
Bonita Curry - Michigan State
  • All Freshman and Sophomore enrolled in University Division. UD does all the retention, dismissals, and probation
  • 60% are major preference students - students are encouraged to "think" early about a major.
  • We communicate with parents
  • Have one credit Freshman seminar Pass/Fail
  • Students on Probation have available a non-required seminar - SOS (Seminar on success)
  • Non-preference students have "assigned advisors"
  • During Summer Orientation there is "Annual Enrollment" i.e. Students enroll for their entire freshman year = Fall & Spring semesters - This has been budgetary based and has existed for the past 6-7 years. Has caused advisors and students some concerns
Andrea Gates - University of Chicago
  • Have general education requirements that are applicable for all majors specifically designed for student retention
  • Retention is high / Graduation rate is high
  • There is a concern for the academically - abled student but do have chronic health, Drug and/or Psychological disorders
Paula Kerezsi - University of Iowa
  • 96% of the 1st year students are seen by the academic advising center, therefore advising is very centralized
  • Have probation seminar "Courses in Common" (Learning Community) (Many retention issues focused on 1st year students)
  • 4 year graduation plan
Sally Dunn - Indiana University
  • Graduation Pact was discussed
  • GradPact insures that all courses needed for a student to graduate will be available within a 4 year time frame
  • This program has created course availability, however data reveals that a slightly higher percentage of students who do NOT enroll in GradPact graduated within 4 years than those students who originally enrolled in GradPact
