Professor Robert Cargill has been awarded a Digital Studio Public Humanities grant which will allow him to purchase the license for the modeling software he will use for his digital reconstruction of the new excavation at Tel Azekeh, outside of Jerusalem in Israel. (April 2012)

We are pleased to announce the winners of the 2012 Lowden and Departmental Prize exams. The Lowden Prize in Latin was a tie between Ryan Holley and Sara Schmidt. The Lowden Prize in Greek went to Clarissa Cigrand. For the Department Prize in Latin, 1st place went to Cara Held and 2nd place to Hillary Richards. The Provost has bestowed this year's Lola Lopez Award for Undergraduate Student Advocacy on Helena Dettmer, Professor of Classics and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs and Curriculum in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
The Lola Lopes Award for Undergraduate Student Advocacy, given annually by the Office of the Provost, honors University of Iowa administrators and staff who support undergraduate education and serve as strong, effective advocates for undergraduate students and the undergraduate experience.

Classics graduate Billie Cotterman (MA, 2010) has just accepted a tenure-track position in Library Science at Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska. She will begin in late August at the rank of assistant professor. In May Billie will complete an MA in Library and Information Science here at Iowa—a perfect complement to her MAs in Latin (University of Florida) and Classics (University of Iowa). Congratulations to Kyle Oskvig, who has been awarded an Excellence in Undergraduate Research Award (EURA) through the Honors Program. This award provides a $1000 allowance for Kyle to attend a conference in the next academic year. The EURA will be presented at the Spring Undergraduate Research Forum on March 24, 2012 in the Iowa Memorial Union, Main Ballroom. Undergraduate Kyle Oskvig has been accepted to the 2012 summer intensive study program at Yale's Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics. He will get a broad overview of bioethics from the program's lectures and seminars, and take advantage of Yale's resources to research and write a capstone paper on bioethics in ancient philosophy. Clarissa Cigrand, who is minoring in ancient Greek, has won a Summer & Short-Term Study Abroad Scholarship to travel over the break to Trivandrum, Kerala, India to do research on religious and psychological healing practices in India for her work in her major, Psychology. The project is also informed by her studies in ancient magic and religion. Clarissa will be working with Dr. Joann Eland of the International Development Program and hopes to expand her awareness of alternative approaches to the medical model and spirituality. (Dec 2010)
