Jessica Wissmann began her appointment as an assistant professor in Classics in 2005. Prior to coming to The University of Iowa she was a visiting assistant professor at Middlebury College in Vermont and New York University, and a Fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C. Her publications include a book titled Motivation und Schmähung: Feigheit in der Ilias und in der griechischen Tragödie. Her research interests are Greek tragedy, ancient education, Homer and his reception in antiquity, the Second Sophistic, and ancient literary criticism. She passed the Erstes Staatsexamen in Greek, Latin, and Education, and received a Ph.D. in Classics from the University of Hamburg.
