About the Program

 

In Communication Studies, you will learn about communication practices and processes, contexts in which communication occurs, the theory of communication as well as the research and criticism that surround and embody the field.  With only one required course in the major, you have the option of selecting courses offered by the department that focus on a specific area within the field of communication or you may creatively combine courses to suit your individual learning and career goals.  The department offers courses focusing on media studies , interpersonal and relational communication as well as courses that emphasize rhetorical studies and public advocacy. In this major, you can study interpersonal, group, organizational, professional, or intercultural communication or take courses that integrate speaking and listening skills, verbal and nonverbal interaction, or argumentation and persuasion.  You will also have the opportunity to learn about technologically mediated communication and how media industries have shaped and reshaped our social interaction, work, politics, and economic activities.

Admission Information

 

The undergraduate program includes a Bachelor of Arts degree. You are required to have and maintain a 2.6 CUMULATIVE GPA as well as the standard 30 semester hours earned before you can officially declare a Communication Studies major and be allowed to register for courses offered by the department.
