Communication Studies is one of 100 programs of study offered through the University of Iowa and is the one of the largest major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.  Communication Studies has become one of the most popular majors at Iowa in part due to our concern that you study human communication from a multifaceted perspective.  It is important to know we're viewed as a top-level Communication Studies program and we have held that distinction for many decades, with all of our programs rated in the top twelve nationally. This distinction recognizes that our faculty are renowned in their areas of expertise -- expertise that they will pass along to you since all our faculty teach undergraduates face to face in the classroom. Also our physical facilities are superior and our long-standing reputation is now housed in a modern building. Perhaps most importantly, though, our students are successful in their endeavors after graduation whether in moving on to graduate school or obtaining a career in the field of their choice.

In Communication Studies, you will learn about communication practices and processes, contexts in which communication occurs, and the theories and research that faculty and others use to develop the field. With only one required course in the major, you have the option of selecting courses offered by the department that focus on a specific area within the field of communication or you may creatively combine courses to suit your individual learning and career goals.

Our undergraduate program provides students with opportunities to develop skills and knowledge to meet the complex communication challenges of the 21st century whether in the workplace, in everyday life or just as a well-rounded thinking citizen. Our program prepares students to move into any number of professions where people are required to engage in one another using effective communication skills. Our goal is to develop sophisticated producers and consumers of communication who:

  1. Understand how face-to-face and media-based communication messages influence and shape      everyday life and public opinion.
  2. Critically analyze and evaluate communication practices
  3. Apply practical oral, written, and visual communication skills and knowledge
