Speech Production: Anatomy and Physiology available on-line

The number of speech-language pathologists in the work force nationally is anticipated to increase by 11 percent by 2016 (www.bls.gov/oco/ocos099.htm#outlook). As stated by the United States Department of Labor, “the combination of growth in the occupation and an expected increase in retirements over the coming years should create excellent job opportunities for speech-language pathologists.” With salaries currently ranging from $35,000 - $70,000, speech-language pathology is not only a rewarding career choice, but also a financially attractive one.

To practice as a speech-language pathologist, you must complete a master's degree in the field. While most students in masters' degree programs first completed an undergraduate degree in speech pathology and audiology, having an undergraduate degree in another discipline should not deter you from pursuing graduate work. However, before doing so, you must complete necessary undergraduate prerequisite coursework before enrolling in graduate classes. Part of that prerequisite undergraduate curriculum involves anatomy and physiology of the speech production mechanism.

Speech Production: Anatomy and Physiology (3:122) is a 4 credit hour online class offered through the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at The University of Iowa for individuals not currently enrolled in the Communication Sciences and Disorders major at Iowa. This class is designed to emulate as closely as possible, the “in-house” class taught to undergraduate majors at Iowa. Speech Production: Anatomy and Physiology (3:122) covers the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory, phonatory, and articulatory systems, and in particular, their roles during the production of speech.  Through a combination of online lectures, videotaped cadaver dissections, laboratory demonstrations, and physiologic data measurement, students will explore the normal production of voice and speech, and approaches to assessing speech physiologic events instrumentally.  The course also includes online weekly office hours.

Speech Production: Anatomy and Physiology (3:122) is offered during fall, spring, and summer semesters each year.
