Voice, Resonance & Swallowing Laboratories
Michael P. Karnell, Ph.D., Program Director

Diagnostic laboratory facilities at the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery are dedicated to assessment of individuals with dysphonia, resonance disorders associated with velopharyngeal inadequacy, and disorders of swallowing. Patient populations include those with organic and behavior based voice disorders, cleft palate, and neurogenic disorders.

Standardized clinical protocols for voice, resonance, and swallowing have been followed since 1997 resulting in a rich data base available for retrospective clinical research and to assist planning for prospective studies.

Collaborative studies are underway with physician researchers in O-HNS and with colleagues at the
Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology intended to examine acoustic, physiologic, and
behavioral components of voice, resonance, and swallowing.
