Speech Physiology Lab
Jerry Moon , Ph.D., Director

The Speech Physiology Laboratory is a general purpose lab designed to allow the recording of various
physiologic events: lip and jaw movement, velopharyngeal mechanism movement, velopharyngeal closure forces, electromyography, oral and nasal airway air pressure and flow. Much previous and ongoing work focuses and the anatomy and physiology of the velopharyngeal mechanism in normal speakers, those with repaired palatal clefts, and in musicians suffering from stress velopharyngeal insufficiency.

The Speech Physiology Lab enjoys-long standing collaborative ties with The University of Illinois and
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Speech and Swallowing Lab. The research team is also involved in intra-departmental collaborations with Dr. Fari Alipour looking at the anatomy and physiology of the false vocal folds and with Dr. Trish Zebrowski looking at motor control issues in children who stutter.
