A Focus on Language Research in the Department
Language development and disorders is a large focus in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at The University of Iowa. The research labs of Dr. Karla McGregor, Dr. Bruce Tomblin, and Dr. Amanda Owen comprise the Iowa Collaboration on Child Language Research. Dr. Jean Gordon, an expert in adult aphasia, and Dr. Richard Hurtig, an expert in psycholinguistics, round out the language faculty.
A Facilitative Research Community
The language faculty in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and their graduate students are members of the Language Discussion Group. The group meets weekly to discuss each other's research projects. Researchers from psychology and speech pathology make up this group. Cultivating new research ideas and improving current studies are collaborative efforts across departments.
Another resource available to students in the department is the cochlear implant center located right next door at The University of Iowa Hospital. Students have used this resource to research language in children with cochlear implants. The center is a premiere cochlear implant clinic that is well regarded and well funded.
Funding Equals More Opportunities
The faculty in Speech Pathology and Audiology at The University of Iowa are successful grant-getters. As such, they are able to mentor students in grantsmanship. Also students benefit from faculty funding via assistantships, research resources and conference travel.
