Departments for Staff
Departments that may be helpful to staff dealing with conflicts include:
Employee and Labor Relations (ELR):responsible for labor relations (blue collar, technical, security, clerical, graduate assistants, and staff employed in tertiary health care bargaining units), contract and policy administration, disciplinary procedures, staff grievance and dispute resolution procedures, Family Medical Leave Act administration, Faculty and Staff Disability Services, Faculty and Staff Immigration Services, and unemployment benefit administration. In each of these areas, ELR provides services to individual staff members, training and support to University departments and agents, and acts as a liaison between the University and unions and affiliated organizations.
Faculty and Staff Disability Services (FSDS): advises college and department administrators, employees and applicants on application of federal and state law, regulations and University policy. In addition, FSDS interprets and develops policy relative to employment of individuals with health conditions.
Faculty and Staff Services/Employee Assistance Program: (FSS/EAP) (Confidential Resource): a confidential, voluntary Employee Assistance Program offering services to University of Iowa faculty, staff and their dependents. Up to four free sessions are available with a licensed mental health professional for the purpose of assessment, referral, and short-term counseling. FSS partners with University of Iowa Behavioral Health to offer sessions in three convenient locations.
Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity (EOD): provides both formal and informal processes to address complaints of discrimination, including, but not limited to, racial discrimination, sexual harassment, discrimination based upon disabilities, consensual relationships, and/or other violations of the University Policy on Human Rights (II-3). EOD also receives complaints under the University Policy on Violence (II-10). (See also Part II. Community Policies, Chapters 3-10.)
Office of the Ombudsperson (Confidential Resource): offers informal dispute resolution for students, faculty and staff. Our mission is to see that all members of the University community are treated fairly. The office provides a confidential, safe place to discuss any concerns about the University, its policies or procedures. The office will direct visitors to additional resources as needed.
Organizational Effectiveness: Central Human Resource staff collaborates with departments to assess a workplace environment and determine strategies to implement needed changes for a positive and productive workplace.
