Assessment, Evaluation, and Assistance with Surveys
One of the purposes of the CQI Tool Box is to provide a framework for quality improvements on campus. We use a variety of tools to assist in the assessment phase of our consultative process including surveys, focus groups, interviews, and other assessments we deem to be the best fit for a given situation.
We provide on-line assessments as part of our consultative process using two different web applications: Survey Monkey and Web Surveyor. If you are considering measuring customer service, employee satisfaction, or any other workplace assessment, contact Pat Kenner at pat-kenner@uiowa.edu.

UI Lean
Organizational Effectiveness and CQI assist departments on campus with LEAN activities, often partnering with internal experts and community/business practitioners.
Partnering in the Community
We have partnered with LEAN experts in the community to improve our practice and learn from their experience.
Partnering with Rockwell Collins
- Kathy Barry, Principal Lean Consultant at Rockwell Collins, has provided templates and materials required to both plan and conduct Lean events using Rockwell Collins methodology for applying Lean to a non-manufacturing environment.
- Kathy used a train-the-trainer approach to teach the University of Iowa how to conduct our own Lean events. Rockwell Collins (Kathy and Mary Voelkel) led the first event, then Kathy and Laura jointly co-lead the second event, Laura led the third event with Kathy providing consultation as needed.
- Laura Reed, Teresa Kulper, Dick See, and Pat Kenner have attended Lean Associate training at Rockwell Collins.
- Kathy and Mary Voelkel conducted Lean Associate training to a group of UI staff.
- Laura and Kathy conducted an additional Lean Associate training at U of Iowa.
Other LEAN Community Partnerships
We have also partnered with The Board of Regents, the Tippie College of Business, Iowa State, the Iowa Quality Center, and John Deere Credit.

Acting on Recommendations from a LEAN event
CQI/OE staff will do scheduled follow-ups at 3 months, 6 months, and one year to determine how the unit is progressing with the project.
One method of tracking progress of complex projects is by using the LEAN implementation issue action resolution template. (Excel spreadsheet)
