About the participants

 Isabel Barbuzza is a University of Iowa associate professor of art, innovative sculptor and installation artist who incorporates everyday objects into her work. Barbuzza's art, which has been exhibited around the world, takes a mixed media approach that includes sawing, sculpture, printmaking, gluing and the book arts.

Glen Epstein is a calligrapher, University of Iowa adjunct professor for the Center for the Book and creator of Iowa's most popular guided correspondence courses. State poet laureate Marvin Bell says Epstein has "one of the biggest hearts and surest hands around." His artwork has been featured at the Peace, Frye, Chicago Institute of Art, Met and Smithsonian, among other museums.

 Ed Folsom, University of Iowa English professor, specializes in nineteenth and twentieth century American poetry and culture and is a world renowned Walt Whitman scholar. Folsom has written books and articles on the poet and his influence on modern and contemporary writers around the globe.

Réne Lecuona, University of Iowa associate professor of piano, has performed solo and chamber music recitals throughout the U.S. and in South America, Mexico and the Caribbean, including as an Artistic Ambassador for the United States. A notoriously lively teacher whose work is featured on several compact discs, Lecuona has also played at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

Alan Sener, associate professor and chair of the Department of Dance at The University of Iowa, was a principal dancer with the Louis Falco Dance Company in New York City and longtime choreographic assistant to the late Falco, and is artistic director of the Falco Repertory. In addition to choreographing and staging dozens of contemporary works, Sener has appeared in TV commercials, music and industrial videos and feature films and has conducted master classes and choreography workshops worldwide.

Portraits from First Impressions


Mary Helen Stefaniak, a graduate of the Iowa Writer's Workshop and head of the creative writing program at Creighton University in Omaha, writes short stories, novellas and personal essays. Her work, including a novella that was shortlisted for the O Henry Prize, has appeared in magazines, journals and anthologies. Her newest book is the novel The Turk and My Mother (W.W. Norton, 2004).

Dave Zollo is a singer, songwriter and musician who founded the Iowa City-based independent recording company Trailer Records. With his blend of country, rhythm & blues and rock, Zollo remains one of the endangered species of young artists who continue to make their living from performing.
