"In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable."

Dwight D. Eisenhower

UI Pandemic Flu Response Planning

In January 2006, Executive Vice President and Provost Michael J. Hogan appointed a task force to examine the University's preparedness in the event of an influenza pandemic.

The task force has created a response plan that identifies the steps to be taken at different stages leading up to and following an influenza pandemic, as well as those on campus who will be involved in those steps. The task force is now continuing to add detail to the plan. For more information, see the History & Background and the Planning section of this web site.

In the plan, the task force has identified the University of Iowa web site as a key communications tool for the campus community. In the event of a pandemic flu event, the UI home page at www.uiowa.edu will feature news about the event as it affects the campus, as well as prominent links to this site.

In advance of such an event, the task force urges all staff, faculty, students, parents, and concerned community members to familiarize themselves with the stages of a pandemic flu event and make their own plans with collagues and family members. While the risk at this point seems minimal, many experts say that, based on history, such an event is inevitable.
